Good afternoon, Raleigh. I know a bunch of good jokes about umbrellas, but they usually go over people’s heads. ☂️
In today’s Raleigh Rundown:
RDU will begin direct flights to Germany soon
The Hurricanes are back in the playoffs
Well-known hotel coming to downtown Raleigh
7 fun things to do in Raleigh this weekend
Let’s get to it. 🏃
STORIES THIS WEEK
The Carolina Hurricanes are back in the NHL playoffs 🏒
The Carolina Hurricanes are back in the playoffs for the sixth consecutive year. After finishing in second place in the Metropolitan Division (and the Eastern Conference), the Hurricanes will take on the New York Islanders in the first round. The Hurricanes and Islanders also met in the first round of last year’s playoffs, with the Canes winning the series four games to two.
The puck drops for game one this Saturday at 5 PM at the PNC arena.
Lufthansa is preparing direct flights from RDU to Germany 🛫
Lufthansa is launching a new nonstop flight from RDU to Frankfurt and is seeking to lease airport property to support its aircraft maintenance operations there. The airline plans to invest $175 million in the new RDU-Frankfurt service, which the state is supporting with $3 million in incentives.
Beginning on June 6th, the plan is to operate this route five times per week. The aircraft that will be used is an Airbus A330-300, with a passenger capacity ranging from 250 to 440 travelers.
The Omni Hotel is coming to downtown Raleigh 🏨
The city of Raleigh and Omni Hotels are moving forward with plans to build a new luxury hotel to support the Raleigh Convention Center expansion. The city has agreed to provide up to $75 million in public funding for the project and will need state approval to issue debt.

The total development cost is estimated at $314.1 million, and the hotel is expected to open in 2027. It will be Omni's third hotel in North Carolina, joining Charlotte and Ashville.
Long-standing Glenwood South eatery has shuttered its doors 🥘
Armadillo Grill, a long-standing Tex-Mex restaurant in Raleigh's Glenwood South, has closed after 22 years. The owners cited changing industry dynamics and rising costs as reasons for the closure of the Glenwood Avenue location, though the original restaurant in Carrboro remains open.
The closure is part of recent changes in Raleigh's downtown food scene, including the upcoming closure of Capital Club 16.
