STORIES THIS WEEK
Raleigh pushing from MLB team ⚾️
Carolina Hurricanes owner Tom Dundon is pushing for an MLB team in Raleigh, but securing corporate support in a mid-sized city without many Fortune 500 companies is a challenge. Hurricanes President Doug Warf believes Raleigh has a strong case, citing its market size and Dundon’s backing. While Nashville is a frontrunner, MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred has indicated an Eastern time zone team is needed, which could favor Raleigh.
With companies like Advance Auto Parts and Lenovo leading the way, much of the needed sponsorship must come from private businesses. The Hurricanes have shown a smaller market can sustain a pro team, especially with strong local engagement. With upcoming renovations to the Lenovo Center and a growing sports district, Raleigh is positioning itself for MLB. Warf stresses that long-term success will come from building generational fan loyalty, just as the Hurricanes have since 1997.

New townhomes coming behind Crabtree Valley Mall 🏠
A Charlotte-based company plans to develop 65 townhomes behind Crabtree Valley Mall in a project called “Crabtree Village,” with groundbreaking set for September. The townhomes, ranging from 1,600 to 2,000 square feet, will offer two- and three-bedroom layouts.

Peter Pappas, CEO of Pappas Properties, expressed gratitude for the Raleigh City Council’s unanimous approval, highlighting the site’s prime location 70 feet above Crabtree Valley. The area has seen growing interest due to its proximity to Research Triangle Park and the Lenovo Center.
The land, located across Crabtree Creek near the Belk store, has changed hands multiple times, selling to an Ohio developer for $3 million in 2020.
New plans for downtown Raleigh development 🏢
Plans for the Salisbury Square development in Downtown Raleigh have shifted due to financial challenges in the commercial real estate market. Dominion Realty Partners now proposes a 7-story residential building with 545 units and a parking deck, replacing the previously planned 20-story mixed-use tower.

The project was initially set to include office and retail space, as well as serve as Dogwood State Bank’s headquarters, but those plans have been put on hold. Rising construction costs and a struggling office market have led to similar changes in other Raleigh developments, such as the RUS Bus project and the Creamery redevelopment. Despite the downsizing, the project will still feature high-end amenities, including courtyards, a pool, a fitness center, and a sky lounge.
Brain cancer drug in development in Durham 💊
Durham-based biopharmaceutical company Chimerix is moving closer to a major regulatory milestone as the FDA has accepted its new drug application for dordaviprone, a treatment for a rare and aggressive brain tumor. The agency granted priority review, with a final decision expected by Aug. 18, potentially making dordaviprone the first FDA-approved therapy for this disease.
Chimerix is preparing for a commercial launch, planning to hire a sales force of 25 to 30 people. The company, which previously sold its smallpox treatment for $238 million, has shifted its focus to developing dordaviprone. Following the FDA announcement, Chimerix’s stock surged over 10%, reflecting investor optimism.
