STORIES THIS WEEK
Raising Cane’s to open a location near NC State 🍗
Raising Cane’s is opening its first Raleigh location at 2420 Hillsborough St., next to Mitch's Tavern and across from N.C. State University. The 6,450-square-foot space, previously a theater, will feature a mezzanine, bar, and rooftop patio.
Known for its chicken fingers and limited menu, Raising Cane’s is expected to open in late 2025. The restaurant will compete with Zaxby's, Alpaca Peruvian Chicken, and Chick-fil-A in the area. This location replaces Umami Asian Bistro, which closed in 2023. Raising Cane’s, founded in 1996, has expanded rapidly, with over 800 locations nationwide and international growth.
Will UNC move its basketball arena off campus? 🏀
UNC-Chapel Hill is exploring the possibility of building a new home for its men's basketball team, potentially off-campus, due to factors like the aging Smith Center, expanding medical facilities, and campus limitations. Chancellor Lee Roberts emphasized that the Smith Center, built in 1986, requires costly repairs, including a new roof, and has issues such as limited amenities and parking.
A new facility could be part of a mixed-use development, providing restaurants, retail, and entertainment. Two main off-campus options are near the Friday Center and Carolina North. While a final decision has not been made, an announcement is expected soon.
NYC Bagel chain coming to Raleigh 🥯
H&H Bagels, a New York-based chain founded in 1972, is expanding to the Triangle with five new locations planned as part of its nationwide franchise growth. This expansion follows its entry into Florida in 2024. Although specific locations in Raleigh and Durham have not been confirmed, they are listed as "coming soon" on the company's website.
Known for its classic bagels and sandwiches, H&H has been a staple in Manhattan and has appeared in popular TV shows like "Seinfeld" and "Sex and the City." The company is also planning franchises in Miami and Southern California, with a total of 70 confirmed locations in cities across the U.S.
Unique Ice Cream shop coming to downtown Raleigh 🍦
Durham-based ice cream shop Simons Says Dip This is expanding to Downtown Raleigh, opening a 1,288-square-foot location at 621 Hillsborough St. in Bloc83 this month. Founded by Audrey and Nathan Simons in 2021, the shop offers soft-serve ice cream with 24 dipping sauces and 30 toppings.

After a successful first year in Durham, the couple decided to open a Raleigh location in response to customer demand. The Raleigh shop will feature '90s-themed decor and indoor seating for 20. The owners plan to expand further in the Triangle and possibly franchise the business in the future.
