Good afternoon, Raleigh. I lost my job at the bank on my first day.

A woman asked me to check her balance, so I pushed her over. 😬

In today’s Raleigh Rundown:

  • 7 fun things to do in Raleigh this weekend

  • Record property tax revaluation appeals

  • New golf experience coming to Raleigh

  • Carolina Hurricanes hire a new general manager

Let’s get to it. 🏃

Stories this week

Office property owners filing record property revaluation appeals 🏣

Wake County's 2024 property revaluations have triggered a surge in commercial property appeals, especially for office spaces. The county saw a 45% increase in commercial property values, but many owners are contesting these new valuations due to market challenges. Office property appeals rose by over 50% compared to 2020, with 330 filed this year.

Notable appellants include SECU, SAS Institute, and Highwoods Properties. Some tech and life sciences properties received high valuations. The appeals process is expected to conclude by Thanksgiving, with some cases potentially moving to the state property tax commission for review.

J. Alexander’s Raleigh property sold 🥩

A Charlotte-based real estate developer, Cambridge Properties, has purchased the land beneath J. Alexander's Restaurant in Raleigh for $6.1 million. The 2.6-acre property, located near Crabtree Valley Mall, was sold by a Hawaii-based LLC. J. Alexander's continues to own and operate the restaurant building, with about 12 years left on its ground lease.

Cambridge Properties' CEO, George Maloomian, expressed optimism about the property's future, citing the area's strong potential for business and retail growth. J. Alexander's, part of SPB Hospitality since 2021, has been operating at this location since 2016 and is currently the only North Carolina location for the multi-state restaurant chain.

New golf experience coming to Raleigh 🏌️

Sam Ratto, co-founder of Videri Chocolate Factory in Downtown Raleigh, is opening a new golf-centric business called Golf Golf Golf near his chocolate factory. The venue will feature golf simulators, an indoor putting green, games, a bar, and an outdoor patio.

Ratto, an avid golfer, sees demand for more indoor golf options as country club memberships become pricier. Golf Golf Golf will offer hourly simulator rounds at $75, as well as memberships. Ratto plans to hire 4-6 employees initially, with sights set on opening in late summer and expanding to multiple locations within two years.

The Carolina Hurricanes have a new general manager 🏢

The Carolina Hurricanes have named Eric Tulsky as their new general manager, promoting him from his interim position following Don Waddell's resignation. Tulsky, with the franchise for 10 years, started as a consultant in 2014 and became assistant GM in 2020. Owner Tom Dundon praised Tulsky's experience and dedication.

This appointment comes as the Hurricanes aim to build on their regular season success and pursue a championship, while also planning major renovations for PNC Arena. Tulsky, who has a background in chemistry and physics from Harvard and Berkeley, will work closely with the coaching staff and management team. His promotion coincides with significant developments for the team and potentially for Raleigh's sports landscape.
