Stories this week

Chase Bank is opening a new branch in Raleigh 🏦

The biggest bank in the country submitted documents to the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency to establish a branch at the intersection of Glenwood Avenue and Oak Park Road, close to the Pleasant Valley Promenade shopping center.

“Pending approval, we hope to begin construction on this location mid this year with an opening date in Q3 or early Q1 next year,” JPMorgan spokeswoman Allison Reed said.

Mary Pierson, Triangle market director for JP Morgan said last month, “When I think about the Triangle and what we’re trying to accomplish, we’ll continue to open branches for many years.”

Key transit corridor is about to be transformed 🚍

Transportation planners are in the final stages of preparation before construction begins along New Bern Avenue in Raleigh for the region's first Bus Rapid Transit corridor.

The first phase of the plan in Wake County is a 5.3-mile route connecting Downtown Raleigh with New Hope Road. The $96 million vision for the corridor is a system of uninterrupted bus lanes separated from general traffic. The plan is for the stretch to be complete by the end of 2025.

What the bus system will look like once complete.

Raleigh is ending its red light camera program 🚦

After over two decades, the city is on the verge of discontinuing its red-light camera initiative. There are currently 25 intersections in Raleigh equipped with these cameras, detecting approximately 40,000 instances of red-light violations annually.

City officials are advising against renewing the contract with Conduent, the company managing the camera systems, by April 8. This program stands as one of the few remaining in the state.

The decision was influenced by insufficient backing for these programs in the N.C. General Assembly, as well as legal challenges faced by other municipalities.

LOCAL BUSINESS

🍻 Raleigh Brewery files for bankruptcy

On Friday, Gizmo Brew Works, responsible for “Raleigh Red,” and operating under the trade name Roth Brewing Company in Raleigh, filed for bankruptcy. The brewery, known for its taprooms in Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill, cited financial difficulties as the reason for the filing.

According to the bankruptcy petition, Gizmo Brew Works reported assets totaling under $500,000, while its debts exceed $1.6 million.

The company's plan during the reorganization process is to keep all taprooms operational. Additionally, they intend to retain all current staff members' employment with the goal of emerging as a stronger and more successful company poised for long-term success.
