Good afternoon, Raleigh. Did you hear that Taylor’s boyfriend won the Super Bowl on Sunday?
In today’s Raleigh Rundown:
Is a Raleigh University in trouble?
Iconic BBQ restaurant moving?
Where to get local chocolate for Valentine’s Day?
Let’s get to it. 🏃
Stories this week
Saint Augustine University aims to raise $5 million to save the school’s accreditation. 💰
The school is launching a fundraising campaign called the Falcon Pride Initiative as it “seeks to elevate financial stability and reaffirm” the school’s “commitment to providing high-quality education to its students,” according to a press release. The initiative was launched last Thursday.
The university’s accrediting agency voted in December to remove the Historically Black school from its membership. The decision followed years of financial challenges for the school as well as previous sanctions imposed by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges.
Areteia Therapeutics, a biotech company in Chapel Hill, has surpassed $400 million in funding for asthma treatment 💊
Areteia’s lead drug candidate has the potential to be the first oral therapy to treat patients with severe asthma that remains uncontrolled. As of right now, there are no other oral products in late-stage development. Aretei’s oral drug would be the first on the market of its kind.
A possible toll road is coming to Capital Boulevard 🛣️
As plans to revamp a congested Capital Boulevard keep hitting financial roadblocks, talks have begun on what it might look like in Raleigh if part of the corridor were a toll road headed toward Wake Forest.
J.J. Eden, executive director of the North Carolina Turnpike Authority, said it’s too early to tell whether tolls are in the highway’s future, but it's being explored, as sections of the road keep failing to make the competitive statewide project schedule.
LOCAL BUSINESS
🐖 One of the oldest restaurants in Downtown Raleigh, Clyde Cooper’s Barbeque, is negotiating a move to a 3-acre lot about four miles from its current location.
The restaurant has been downtown since 1938, but issues downtown has faced in recent years - rising crime, homelessness, and empty streets after the pandemic - have led owner Debbie Holt to weigh her options.
“Anything is subject to change,” she has recently said. “If everything goes through then yes, we will be moving.”
❤️ Where to find the best local chocolate and sweets. Valentine’s Day may be over, but this is when the discounted prices begin. 😃
Videri Chocolate Factory (327 W. Davie St., Raleigh) - In addition to the delicious bars, Videri has confections and a coffee bar.
Escazu Chocolates (936 N. Blount St., Raleigh) - The bars are delicious gifts on their own (the Chipotle chili and vanilla!), but you can also get a box of freshly made truffles.
Chocolate Smiles (312 W Chatham St., Cary) - This place is a chocolate lover's dream. Fudge, truffles, chocolate-covered fruit, and just about anything else sweet can be found here. The lines can get pretty long around the holidays so make sure to place your orders early.
Chocolatay Confections (306 W. Franklin St., Chapel Hill) - This family-owned chocolate shop has a location inside Blue Dogwood Public Market. You can also order their confections online.
The Chocolate Boutique (8480 Honeycutt Rd, Raleigh) - There are tons of chocolate options here including truffles and chocolate-covered nuts. They also host classes.
NoFo at the Pig (2014 Fairview Rd, Raleigh) - They have a big candy case upstairs that features lots of options. Plus you can also check out the rest of the shop for other gift ideas.

Furnishing homes, changing lives.
The Green Chair Project re-uses furnishings donated by our community to help our neighbors in need facing the challenges of homelessness, crisis, and disaster. Lives change when families and individuals are nurtured and sustained in a well-equipped home.
In addition to furnishing homes, our Sweeter Dreams program provides beds and cribs for the 6,000 Wake County children who currently sleep on the floor or with another person. Over 100 partner agencies refer clients to The Green Chair Project once they have stable housing and a stable income.
